I took this Creative Non-Fiction course to challenge myself. I knew I was a fairly decent fiction writer, and my poetry was not half bad either. I had imagined myself learning how to write fiction with non-fiction elements, but instead found myself in a class that focused on the world around me. How do people interact? How do our daily activities influence us? Or better, how can we make our daily lives influence others? We covered four different types of non-fiction essays in this course: the lyrical essay, the memoir, the profile, and the event essay. Each presented different challenges and elements of these essays can be found within each other. Of these four, I have chosen to post my memoir and my event essay. I feel these are the areas in which my writing and thinking most shines. What I found to be most beneficial in this course was how the writing process was structured. We would read several examples of the type of essay we were learning about and reflect on the elements we found. We would then discuss these examples in class and focus on a few key elements we were to incorporate in our writing. After writing drafts of our essays and received feedback from the instructor, we would present our writings to the class. These workshops were highly valuable. The class would sit in a circle and discuss the good points of each student’s essay and some point for revision. This style and format kept anyone from being left out or receiving only poor feedback. The participation of the instructor in these workshops was also helpful as it encouraged outside-the-box thinking. After receiving verbal and written feedback on my essays, I was given the opportunity to change and leave what I felt I should. This whole process helped me to learn how to give encouraging and useful feedback, while also taking and applying the feedback that was given to me. This process did not change my writing style. Rather, it enhanced it. I found this course to be valuable in teaching the fundamental principles of writing as well as giving and receiving feedback from others.
